The perfect sleep environment could be the difference between you tossing and turning the entire night and you actually getting a peaceful slumber.
While there are so many factors when it comes to a good night's sleep (such as not drinking caffeine shortly before bed, incorporating some downtime that features no technological devices and trying to eliminate stress before your head hits the pillow), creating the perfect sleep environment, or at least your ideal sleep environment, plays a major role.
In the spirit of that thinking, here are some things to keep in mind when building your perfect sleep environment.
Things To Keep In Mind When Building The Perfect Sleep Environment
- Lighting
- Temperature
- Comfort
- Distractions
Lighting
While everyone has their own personal preferences, you do not want light shining in your room at night, whether it is the moon itself shining in from your window or lights from outside your room.
Reminder: Light is not a stimulus for sleep. In fact, the opposite rings true.
Therefore, it is essential to make sure your blinds/curtains block out light during the night and in the morning. Simply closing your door could fix the lighting from roommates/other rooms.
If you must need some form of nightlight, then that is okay -- just make sure it is not too bright, because that alone could keep you up at night.
Temperature
If your room is too hot at night, guess what? You will likely wake up during the middle of the night, drenched in sweat. Once that happens, good luck getting back to sleep.
The key is to make sure your room is at the ideal temperature before you bundle up in your covers. You can make your ideal temperature possible by incorporating a fan, turning on the AC or opening a window in your bedroom in hopes of letting some form of breeze in.
If it gets too cold from any of the above methods, then you can rest assured that your blankets will keep you warm. You could also go to sleep with socks and/or gloves on. Do whatever you need to do, but make sure your bedroom is at the ideal temperature each and every night before you go to bed.
Comfort
When people are having trouble sleeping, they tend to look at what is going on in their lives. For example, they contemplate if they are drinking coffee too late in the day, which could be interfering with their sleep schedules. They also wonder if they are thinking too much while they are in bed (spoiler: stressing out and worrying could be the root to your sleeping problems).
This is all well and good, but some people need to look at one of the most basic aspects -- is your bed comfortable enough?
Are your pillows beat up, which means no "fluff" is left? Is your bed the equivalent of sleeping on springs? Are you still rocking your old sheets from high school, or even worse, middle school?
If you are having trouble sleeping, then monitor how comfortable you actually are at night, and then make some necessary changes to ensure your comfort.
Distractions
Just like trying to create the perfect work environment, when creating your perfect sleep environment, you have to cut out all of the distractions. This means noisy roommates, your TV, your smartphone (it should be on silent when you are sleeping!) and anything and everything in between.
This is especially the case if you are a light sleeper. Honestly, how do you expect to fall asleep (and stay asleep) when distractions are rearing their nasty heads? If you want to create your perfect sleep environment, then the distractions have to be nonexistent.
Make sure to use the tips above to your advantage, and here's to a better night's sleep!
